Adams Family Legacy
Mission: To expand public awareness of the Adams family legacy and to preserve its unique heritage
The donor, Charles Francis Adams, was a direct descendant of the two Adams Presidents. The family legacy
is rich in terms of public service and a commitment to integrity, ethical behavior and innovation. The Trust
seeks to embody those family values and to find opportunities to sustain the family heritage.
Initially, the Trust has focused on projects in which the donor had been directly engaged. The Trust
will selectively identify other projects in the future that contribute to public appreciation for the unique
legacy of the Adams family.

The C. F. Adams Charitable Trust contributed to extensive site restoration to the monument commissioned by
Henry Adams for the grave of his wife, Marion Hooper "Clover" Adams. A collaborative project by the sculptor,
Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Stanford White, architect, the memorial holds both artistic and historic importance.
The restoration included drainage improvements, replacement of walkways and landscaping with every effort made
to assure historical accuracy.

The C. F. Adams Charitable Trust provided capital funds to protect and preserve the "Old House"
in Quincy where John and Abigail resided during most of their marriage and is now under the jurisdiction
of the National Park Service. The increased interest in the Founding Fathers has resulted in a rapid growth
in visitor use and a corresponding need to protect the historic structure and its contents.

Massachusetts Historical Society
In the two centuries since the founding of the Massachusetts Historical Society (MHS), its
mission has remained constant: to collect, preserve, and communicate historical information
about Massachusetts and the nation to the widest possible audience. One of its most significant
manuscript collections is the Adams Family Papers comprising over a quarter million documents,
including letters and diaries, of several generations of Adamses. The collection, dating from
1639 to 1889 includes correspondence, letterbooks, diaries, literary manuscripts, speeches and
legal and business papers.

The C. F. Adams Charitable Trust expanded public access to the Adams Family Papers by underwriting the
digitization of the edited materials to create a searchable electronic archive. It presents images of
manuscripts and digital transcriptions from the Adams Family Papers, including correspondence between
John and Abigail Adams, the diary of John Adams, and the autobiography of John Adams. The Trust has
made subsequent grants to sponsor three paid summer fellowships for public school teachers to develop
curriculum materials using the digitized materials and to provide critical feedback about the website's
effectiveness to Society staff.
