Adams Family Legacy

Mission: To expand public awareness of the Adams family legacy and to preserve its unique heritage

The donor, Charles Francis Adams, was a direct descendant of the two Adams Presidents. The family legacy is rich in terms of public service and a commitment to integrity, ethical behavior and innovation. The Trust seeks to embody those family values and to find opportunities to sustain the family heritage.

Initially, the Trust has focused on projects in which the donor had been directly engaged. The Trust will selectively identify other projects in the future that contribute to public appreciation for the unique legacy of the Adams family.

The C. F. Adams Charitable Trust contributed to extensive site restoration to the monument commissioned by Henry Adams for the grave of his wife, Marion Hooper "Clover" Adams. A collaborative project by the sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Stanford White, architect, the memorial holds both artistic and historic importance. The restoration included drainage improvements, replacement of walkways and landscaping with every effort made to assure historical accuracy.

The park has two main sites: the Birthplaces of 2nd U.S. President John Adams and 6th U.S. President John Quincy Adams, and Peacefield including the "Old House," home to four generations of the Adams family, and the Stone Library which contains more than 14,000 historic volumes.

The C. F. Adams Charitable Trust provided capital funds to protect and preserve the "Old House" in Quincy where John and Abigail resided during most of their marriage and is now under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service. The increased interest in the Founding Fathers has resulted in a rapid growth in visitor use and a corresponding need to protect the historic structure and its contents.

Boston Landmarks Orchestra
The Boston Landmarks Orchestra presents orchestral music performances in significant architectural, historical, and geographical settings throughout the Boston area, always free to the public. The Orchestra aims to help its diverse audiences grow in their appreciation both of the fine music it offers and the special places where it performs. It is the mission of the Orchestra and its Artistic Director, Charles Ansbacher, to create a legacy of new compositions specifically for children. Each year, the Landmarks Orchestra commissions a new work to introduce young people to an orchestra and to teach history through music. These new works are presented at Landmarks Concerts for Children.

The C. F. Adams Charitable Trust helped to underwrite the commission of "John Adams: the Voice Heard Round the World" for the Orchestra's Concerts for Children. The music composed by Anthony DiLorenzo and the accompanying original narrative by Marian Carlson told the story of John Adams' Presidency through the eyes of his son, John Quincy Adams. It was performed seven times during the 2008 summer season and was recorded in July 2008.

"The support provided by the C. f. Adams charitable Trust for his project not only had a tremendously positive effect on our organization in 2008, but will also ensure that this music will be heard for many years into the future. We anticipate that this new work will be performed not just in Boston but my other orchestras around the country as well. It is just this type of support that guarantees that orchestral music will remain alive and well in our communities, and that children will be exposed to its joys and feel its emotional impact."

Massachusetts Historical Society
In the two centuries since the founding of the Massachusetts Historical Society (MHS), its mission has remained constant: to collect, preserve, and communicate historical information about Massachusetts and the nation to the widest possible audience. One of its most significant manuscript collections is the Adams Family Papers comprising over a quarter million documents, including letters and diaries, of several generations of Adamses. The collection, dating from 1639 to 1889 includes correspondence, letterbooks, diaries, literary manuscripts, speeches and legal and business papers.

The C. F. Adams Charitable Trust expanded public access to the Adams Family Papers by underwriting the initial digitization of the edited materials to create a searchable electronic archive. It presents images of manuscripts and digital transcriptions from the Adams Family Papers, including correspondence between John and Abigail Adams, the diary of John Adams, and the autobiography of John Adams. The Trust made subsequent grants to sponsor three paid summer fellowships for public school teachers to develop curriculum materials using the digitized materials and to provide critical feedback about the website's effectiveness to Society staff.
